Compounding is the mixing of drugs by a pharmacist, physician, or veterinarian to fit the unique needs of a patient. This may be done for medically necessary reasons, such as to change the form of the medication from a solid pill to a liquid, to avoid a non-essential ingredient that the patient is allergic to, or to obtain the exact dose needed. It may also be done for voluntary reasons, such as adding favorite flavors to a medication.
In every medical practice there are a few patients who have not responded to traditional treatment or who have a unique medical circumstance. These patients can be helped. Let us work with you to provide a solution for their medical problems.
Compounding allows a practitioner to prescribe and a pharmacist to prepare a customized medication that is not commercially available, or to place an available medication into a different dosage form to meet a specific patient need to improve compliance.
More flexibility with regard to dosage, strength and route of administration is another benefit of compounded products. Concentration can be changed, and flavoring can be added to disguise an unpleasant taste. The product can be made with or without sugar using artificial sweeteners, and can be prepared with or without added color or dyes. Medication can often be placed into a different dosage form that is more convenient to administer or may be better absorbed. Side effects such as GI stress can be eliminated by changing the route of administration.
Discontinued products have often been removed from the market due to decreasing drug utilization and declining manufacturer profits on that particular product. However, there are often patients for whom this product provided the best remedy. Using pharmaceutical grade chemicals, our specially trained pharmacists, using the proper equipment, can compound a medication containing the same active ingredients as the discontinued product.
Hospice, geriatric and pediatric patients often have unique needs, and we can provide specific solutions for their medication problems.
Endless possibilities!
Not only can we compound the dosage forms with which you are most familiar (solutions, suspensions, suppositories and creams); our pharmacists can prepare lozenges, sprays, transdermal preparations, powders, otic insufflation, lollipops, oral rinses, popsicle, urethral inserts and inhalations. Unique containers and devices also provide many options for medication administration.
Meeting Special Needs
- Optimal dosage and dosage forms to achieve desired therapeutic goals, eliminating unnecessary waste and expense.
- Change in delivery system for those unable to swallow - to a troche, lollipop, topical preparations, suppository, etc.
- Targeting of drug specific site to decrease incidence of systemic side effects.
- Elimination of dyes, flavors, preservatives, lactose, fragrances, and other excipients contained in a commercial formulation which are not tolerated or may induce an allergic reaction.
- Combination of multiple medications into a single cream or other product (stability permitting) for more convenient use and improved compliance.
Can any pharmacy compound?
Preparations of these specialized products requires chemicals and equipment that are not available in most pharmacies. Our pharmacists have received extensive additional training in compounding techniques. We have a dedicated compounding lab that includes a Class 1000 clean room. In addition, we have a support network that generates a constant exchange of ideas, innovations and techniques involving compounding, and includes several Ph.D chemists and pharmacists who research the feasibility of new formulations.
